Research: Effectiveness of Psychosocial Interventions for Adults With Substance Use Disorder That Have a Co-Occurring Common Mental Health Disorder: An Umbrella Review

This umbrella review of 28 systematic reviews found that integrated (coordinated) treatment for co-occurring substance use and common mental health disorders (depression, anxiety, PTSD) was better than treating one condition alone and usually better than parallel uncoordinated services. All psychosocial interventions showed improvement, including active comparators, precluding recommendation of one type over another. Limited evidence suggested sequential treatment may be similarly effective to integrated treatment.
