Abstract

In todays debate about a user oriented humanistic turn in mental health care, the early Foucault is once again relevant. His works from 1954 show that understanding mental phenomena is not found in universal medical concepts but in reflection on lived experiences. Foucault is critical to psychologys medical foundations. Instead of focusing on medical and physiological matters he suggests psychology should be more user oriented and focus on the human being and on social and cultural contexts.
